infrequenly asked questions (but still good enough for a FAQ)

  • You aren’t a robot, and neither are we. There is something special about us men using our hands. We learn and work with our hands, love and make deals with our hands, and you even style your hair with your hands. We respect other manufacturers that do use machines to meet demand and scale, but to us at Paul Onyx Pomade, it’d feel weird to not use our hands to make our pomades. For now, our pomades are and will be ‘from our hands to yours’ type of deal.

  • The water based pomade uses a set of ingredients that don’t have oils in it as the predominant base. So the texture of it will be harder than regular hair gel. Water based pomade washes off more easily than oil based pomade and also tends to smell better. The water based pomade is also vegan, and is alcohol free, sulfite free, paraben free, and gluten free.

The oil-based pomade can be used for hair and beard, and we consider it to be a “balm”. This will be waxier to the touch, and more flexible to use, but may require some extra wash time to wash off. The oil based balm will tend to not smell as strong as the water based pomade, and humidity and warmth may affect your do’, since waxes and oils melt in the heat.

  • Paul Onyx Pomades are potent and dense. If you pick up and feel the weight of other pomades, you will notice that ours is on the heavier side. What this means is that you don’t have to use a ton of pomade. For regular combovers, about a dime-sized amount of our water based pomade added to lightly damp hair will suffice. If you your hair is too stiff, you can sprinkle more water on your hair to dilute the pomade, or if it’s too soft, you can gradually add more until you get used to the amount you’re gonna use. For our oil-based balm, about a quarter-sized amount should do, but make sure you rub it in your hands well to get a good application. You can then use whatever is left on your hands for your beard if you’d like, before you wash the balm off your hands.

  • In order to add scents to our water-based pomade, we need to use ingredients that will disperse oil fragrances into our pomade. What you might (rarely) see slowly ‘dripping’ as you rotate your can side to side is a product of us using slightly more of the fragrance oil mixture, which is totally normal. As you use the pomade, you’ll naturally mix it around. The temperature can also cause temporary separation, especially during delivery, as the pomade returns to room temperature and hardens again.

  • We believe that we have all been conditioned to assume that all hair products need to have a strong, pleasant smell. In fact, many ingredients that help retain scent will cause the scent to dissipate anyway, like colognes, which use alcohol, which evaporates, which is why colognes don’t last that long. In order to create a stronger scent, there are ingredients and preservatives that we would have to use, that we just refuse to use because the long term health risks are still being studied. If you prefer a product that smells stronger, then Paul Onyx Pomades may not be for you. If you want to look good using a high quality product, then welcome to the fam!

  • In Murrieta, California, which is geographically located in the Temecula Valley in SoCal. For those of you wondering where the heck that is, it’s about an hour and change northeast of San Diego and a couple hours southeast of Los Angeles.

  • Depends who’s asking…. just kidding. Paul Onyx is derivative word play that represents the owner’s kids’ names. The official answer is US. We are Paul Onyx.

  • Unless you’re an animal, otherwise, no. We never have and never will test our products on animals. I doubt they’d want to anyway.

  • If you don’t like it, reach out, and we will work it out. That is our policy. In all honesty, if you buy our pomade and you hate it, let us learn why, and we’ll make it right for you and/or give you a refund.

  • For water based pomades, just washing your hair with water will generally suffice. For oil-based balms, you may want to use shampoo, as shampoo will help extract the oils from your hair (which is kinda what shampoo is supposed to do anyway). Although, use your own judgement on how often to use shampoo - we don’t use shampoo daily, and after using the oil-based balm, we actually kinda think that the way the balm thickens the hair is kinda cool and we just leave it in and restyle our hair the next day without the need to use any pomade at all that second day (it’s that good).

  • Right now, we just feel like we have a cool product and a cool brand to offer to cool dudes like you. We’re happy enough bringing this product to you and don’t really have intentions to dominate the market or become the next big thing. There are many great pomade brands out there that smell fantastic and make you look it too - we just have a slightly different approach to the way we do things at Paul Onyx.
